"A Group Of 150 Birmingham-Hoover [Alabama] area pastors has organized a plan for 40 days of prayer to unify the city, called 'City, Thou Art Loosed.' The designated 40 days of prayer began September 23 [concluding] with a community prayer rally at Boutwell Auditorium [in Birmingham] on November 1, the night before the presidential election.
"The Rev. Dusty Hammock, pastor of Point of Grace Ministries in Hoover, initiated the effort to establish unity among the city's churches. 'By praying together, we believe the barriers are going to fall,' Hammock said. 'By uniting the churches, we plan to revitalize the city spiritually. The healing of our land begins with prayer.' ...
"More than 8,000 prayer manuals have been distributed, designed to get individuals praying on the same topics every day. 'During the 40 days of prayer leading up to the rally, everybody is praying the same prayer,' said George Stewart, executive director of the Church at Birmingham Ministers' Alliance, representing about 50 predominantly black churches. 'It's exciting to see the churches come together. It's probably one of the greatest rallies across racial and denominational lines that we've seen.' ...
