Spiritual growth restores health and happiness

A few years ago, in July of 1994, I found I needed help in my life. When my husband and I retired from very demanding jobs, we moved to a new home 1,500 miles away. I felt overwhelmed. I was completely exhausted, physically and mentally. There didn't seem to be any way I could find the strength to cope with unpacking and moving in. In addition, I was suffering depression, chronic neck pain, nausea, headaches, and an assortment of other ailments. Thank goodness for my husband, who, with some help from my daughter, did most of the work.

I was familiar with a statement in Science and Health: "Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies" (p. 162). The same paragraph includes this thought: "The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind."

Soon I realized that if I was going to get out of my "hole," I had to sort out what I was thinking. I called a Christian Science practitioner to help me find a spiritual solution through prayer. Very perceptively, and gently, she said that perhaps what I needed to do was to get rid of all the mental scars that I was still carrying around from my former employment. I had greatly enjoyed my work as a teacher and coordinator in an inner-city school system. But for nine years I had suffered constant criticism from my immediate supervisor, who had also persistently pressured me to do dishonest things.
