Prayer eliminates lump in breast
Several years ago, after our children were grown and gone from home, I noticed a lump in one breast. Through my study of Christian Science, I had come to understand that life is not physiological, but spiritual, and that life and usefulness are inherent in our "spiritual genes" as the image and likeness of the infinite and eternal God. I also knew that we would always exist—as we always had—because we coexist with the God who always is, the great I AM, the name for Himself that God spoke to Moses. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy states: "There is but one creator and one creation. This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever reflected" (pp. 502-503). I knew that God's plan for my life was always renewing itself, and that He/She had many lessons for me to learn. The reality was that I was becoming useful in a higher way; therefore I was indispensable to God's universe and plan.
One day I saw new meaning in the story of the tares and the wheat (see Matt. 13:24-30). When the farmer's wheat came up, there were also weeds coming up. The servants wanted to pull the weeds immediately, but the farmer wouldn't let them because the wheat might be damaged in the process. He instructed them to wait until harvest, when the weeds would be easily distinguishable from the golden wheat as it ripened. It occurred to me that the medical solutions offered for some physical problems had the effect of precipitously destroying the wheat along with the tares, the good along with the evil.
