WOMEN WHO LEANED ON GOD
Certain of God's presence
—on and off the battlefield
"God gives the strength and the thing that seemed impossible is done."
Clara Barton came face to face with the Civil War while she was working for the United States Patent Office in Washington, D.C. Through the events she witnessed, she was led to become a battlefield nurse who worked not just behind the lines but on the battlefield itself. In fact, during the battles at Fredericksburg and Antietam, she was nearly killed when shell fragments tore through her clothing. A tireless worker on behalf of humanity, she went on to found the American Red Cross.
