Here's a second set of responses readers shared with us about their understanding of God's nature. The first part appeared in last week's issue.
What is God?
(Part two)
God is my best friend. This is the friend who never leaves. Immanuel, a name for this friend, even means "God with us." This friend takes us to previously unimagined and unattained reaches of thought and experience. We can't get into a fix this friend can't help us out of. In the most complicated or terrifying situation, "there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother" (Prov. 18:24). This friend speaks our language, as in this passage: "The Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend" (Ex. 33:11). One of the things this friend tells us is that we are immortal. Awareness of our immortalilty and innate goodness is a key ingredient in this friendship.
My healing was fast. I was able to participate easily in the next day's climb of several thousand feet.
