Prayer heals back trouble

This past fall I began a new night job in manufacturing. Soon I began to experience sharp pain in my lower back region. It did not go away. Continuing to perform my work each day was a challenge. As I am a Christian Scientist, however, I turned wholeheartedly to God in prayer. Each day before heading to my factory I stopped at the Christian Science Reading Room, where I found ideas in the Christian Science periodicals and read the weekly Bible Lesson. This prayer gave me the strength to continue. And the friendly reception of Reading Room attendants encouraged me, as well.

In my research into metaphysical ideas, I discovered this statement in Science and Health: "It requires courage to utter truth; for the higher Truth lifts her voice, the louder will error scream, until its inarticulate sound is forever silenced in oblivion" (p. 97). I literally uttered truth to myself quietly as pain screamed at me.

I also committed to memory the following statement from Science and Health: "Mind is the master of the corporeal senses, and can conquer sickness, sin, and death. Exercise this God-given authority. Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action. Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man" (p. 393).
