Spiritual understanding removes growth on arm
One morning while I was showering, I noticed a small, unnatural growth on my upper arm. At first I was inclined to examine it and worry about it. But then I remembered these words from Science and Health: "Look away from the body." I looked up the rest of the passage, which reads, "Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality. Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts" (p. 261).
I realized that my only substance is spiritual, because I reflect God, who is Spirit. Spiritual substance can never be subject to harm or to any unnatural manifestation. The only growth I could experience is spiritual, and God is the power enforcing this truth of my being.
On the next day when I showered, I was tempted to see how my arm was doing. But I was able to resist looking at or studying matter to find evidence of my spirituality. I knew that only God, Mind, gives me the right understanding of my true selfhood and of my substance, revealing them as spiritual. This is the only evidence of my spirituality that I need.
There was no mark to indicate there had ever been any unnatural condition on my arm.
A week or two later when I was preparing to shower, I felt something rough on my arm and saw that the growth had dried up. During the shower it came off naturally. There was no mark to indicate there had ever been any unnatural condition on my arm. I am grateful to God for His ever-present power and goodness. I'm glad that we can turn to Him at once to correct our thinking, receive His help, and demonstrate His love in healing. I am grateful to Christ Jesus, who so clearly demonstrated his sonship with God that he could point us to our "Father, which is in heaven" (see Matt. 23:9). And I am grateful to Mary Baker Eddy, who so closely followed Christ Jesus and so seriously obeyed his instruction to do the works he did, that she was able to discover the Christ Science that lay behind his works. For her explanation of this Science, which enables us to learn and practice it, I am forever grateful.
