A love embracing all congregations

Early in December on a Saturday morning, I had finished rehearsing the texts I was to read for the Sunday service in my branch Church of Christ, Scientist. As I came out of the church, someone waved to me from a car. It was one of the ministers from another Christian church in our town. As I stood next to the car, she began to pour out a tale of severe difficulties at her church.

A dispute, which involved her and her senior minister, had mushroomed to such a degree that in her mind it threatened her viability as a minister in our community. Church authorities at the state level were being brought in to mediate the difficulty. Also the congregation had become aware of the problems, and that was creating hardships for everyone.

I was grateful that during the rehearsal that morning I'd had the privilege of reading aloud for the last hour the truth of God and man. It was apparent that there was a desire that I should take sides, and yet I knew that I must not do that. I knew I should just stick with the Bible and Christ Jesus, and talk about the things that this minister and I had in common. I wanted to be genuinely helpful, healing, and Christian.
