In the chapter "Christian Science Practice" in Science and Health...
In the chapter "Christian Science Practice" in Science and Health, we find these words: "Immortal Mind, governing all, must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual" (p. 427). At one time, I had an opportunity to prove the truth in this statement.
A filling in one of my teeth had fallen out, and there was pain and swelling around the tooth. I visited a dentist, expecting to have the tooth repaired. He said the tooth could not be saved and advised pulling it. When the tooth was out, the dentist expressed concern because of an abscess and prescribed medication to counteract the infection. I thanked him, and assured him I would be fine.
On returning home, I called a Christian Science practitioner and asked her for treatment, as my desire was to be healed through prayer without medication. For two or three days there was no improvement. One night the swelling in my face became very hard, and it was difficult for me to swallow.
I acknowledged that God, immortal Mind, is the only and supreme governing power over all. It then follows that disease has no power or reality but is a false belief—a lie that man can be controlled by a power opposed to God. Reasoning from this premise, I prayed diligently to allay my fear and accept only the reality of my being as the pure and perfect child of God. I knew that the practitioner was praying in a similar way.
Complete relief from all the discomfort was immediate.
Suddenly, these words came to me as clearly as a voice talking to me: "Healed is thy hardness." I realized the words were from a hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal. Turning to the Hymnal, I found the line completed by these words: "His love hath dissolved it" (No. 278). The hymn was clearly telling me that my hardness of thought needed to be, and could be, dissolved with Love—divine Love. I realized that God's love can destroy any material belief of hardness whether in thought or in an outward effect of thought on the body. With all my heart, I reached out to Love, to God, for healing.
Within seconds of this sincere prayer acknowledging the presence of God's healing love, a small opening came under my chin, and the abscess began to drain. All pain, hardness in my face, and difficulty in swallowing disappeared, and complete relief was immediate. Within a few days the swelling was completely gone, the drainage stopped, and the hole closed normally.
It was a joy for me to prove that God's love sets aside so-called physical laws, revealing all law as spiritual and harmonious. God's love truly does dissolve the hardness of material thought and establishes His supremacy "in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual."
