TO OUR READERS

For many the holiday season is a happy time—a time to be with family and friends and share the joy of Christmas. For some, though, the holidays may seem a bit too quiet—too alone. That's what the author of this week's focus article was concerned about the year her father passed on. As she prayed, however, she discerned anew the true spirit of the season, and this inspiration not only sustained but invigorated her. We know you'll enjoy reading about how her Christmas celebration turned out that year.

"Employed by God permanently" offers a spiritual perspective on work and shares how one woman prayed when her husband lost his job. Be prepared for the phrase "seeing is believing" never again to have quite the same meaning after you've read "Is seeing really believing?" Children will appreciate the lesson in "What Kenny learned from the polka-dot story." And "Christmas can't be denied" can help us all resist the materialism that so often attends the season.

In "Rediscovering our 'first love'" and "Homosexuality—how do I respond?" authors share their experiences in thinking and praying about some of the issues that challenge people's view of appropriate relationships. Next, "How clean are your feet?" offers a lighthearted but effective yardstick for measuring the purity of our thoughts about our fellowman. The penultimate installment in the "Christian Science Sentinel retrospective" series appears this week. And "News & Trends" presents a report about a conference on women in religion. There's plenty here to stimulate thought and prayer.
