CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SENTINEL

1898—A Hundred Years of Watching and Holding Guard—1998

The 1950s, '60s, and '70s brought tremendous change to most of the world. Although the Second World War had ended, the international community still saw conflict—in Europe, South America, the Mideast, Africa, and Asia. And people were introduced to major technological changes—television, travel around the globe by jet airplane, satellites in space, computers and everything that went with them. By the early 1970s, the sharing of information and general communication was taking place at a previously unimagined rate.

Each week the Christian Science Sentinel presented its message, showing the world how God's power and law were practical in this whirlwind of change. The Sentinel's design evolved in response to the needs of its readers, as you can see from this sample cover. Here is an excerpt from an editorial in the March 26, 1979 issue: "If too much of our vitality has been sacrificed in piecing together the puzzle of human existence, we need to devote less time to shuffling those pieces around in an effort to make them fit. We need to admit the presence and completeness of God and man, now. We need to lift our vision to a recognition that God's infinite love is embracing the whole of being and that we always fit distinctly and perfectly into His presence" (p. 533).

The 1980s and '90s brought change at an even faster pace. The Sentinel continued to the evolve to meet the demands of those decades, grounded on the unchanging rule of God, divine Truth.
