Two healings that I experienced during my college years strengthened...
Two healings that I experienced during my college years strengthened my faith in the healing power of Christian Science. With the help of my mother's prayers, a broken ankle was healed within two weeks after simply being taped up by a physician who knew we were Christian Scientists. And a severe case of typhoid fever was healed with the aid of a consecrated practitioner and the care of a Christian Science nurse.
Christian Science came into our family when my mother sought the help of a Christian Science practitioner and was at once healed of recurrent headaches, other health problems, and the need to wear reading glasses. Her growing understanding and practice of this religion later enabled her to overcome financial lack and many so-called children's diseases among us children.
Later, when I had children of my own, an especially memorable experience occurred when our son was in junior high school. For me it was an example of God's fulfilling His promise "Before they call, I will answer" (Isa. 65:24). Unable to sleep one night, I began to review familiar Bible verses. One of the first that came to mind was "He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken" (Ps.34:20). As I prayed to understand this idea more deeply, I thought about bones as representing a framework, and was reminded of Mrs. Eddy's reference to outline in Science and Health: "Beauty is a thing of life, which dwells forever in the eternal Mind and reflects the charms of His goodness in expression, form, outline, and color" (p. 247). After prayerful contemplation of man as the wholly spiritual reflection of God, I carefully went over the Lord's Prayer, analyzing and appreciating each line. A feeling of great peace and assurance of God's loving care enveloped me, and I fell peacefully asleep.
