A number of years ago, while I was attending a Christian Science Sunday School, a beloved teacher told us that in the event of an accident, it was most important to turn thought to God to reverse any effects of the accident. Within a few years I had an opportunity to demonstrate this.
I was in the Army, and we had been firing automatic rifles on a target range. The barrels of the guns were very hot. I inadvertently lifted my weapon by the barrel instead of by the wooden handgrip.
Quickly I turned my thought to God, away from the pain I felt and toward spiritual truth. There was not time for detailed Christian Science treatment, but I was very aware of God's constant presence, and I suffered no ill effects from the heat. I have since felt that this demonstration was pivotal in my decision to continue to practice Christian Science.
