A healing I had five years ago really helped me to see proofs of God's care. It happened with the birth of my second child.

I should begin by stating that I had learned in my first pregnancy that prayer regarding childbirth encompasses so much more than healing physical discomfort. Before this first birth, I had what I would describe as a naive ignorance of the aggressive material claims attributed to labor and childbirth. Now I knew that in order to rely on God for our well-being, it is in fact necessary to be alert to counteract through prayer suggestions that certain situations and physical conditions might be uncontrollable, leaving us helpless and God very far removed.

So when I discovered that I was pregnant again, I made the decision early on to pray diligently. The spiritual study I undertook wasn't a burden. I looked forward to it—especially each evening, when during the first few months I found a particular need to deal with nausea. One citation helped me a great deal: "No evidence before the material senses can close my eyes to the scientific proof that God, good, is supreme" (Miscellaneous Writings by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 277). I was beginning to see more clearly the practicality of the command "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
