"French-born Gen. Georges F. Doriot, 86, has the air of a distinguished gentleman. He is gaunt but walks with military smartness. His career credentials are lofty but he speaks with earthy humility.

"Gen. Doriot was, for 35 years, a Harvard professor (industrial management) until his retirement in 1966. He also headed the American Research and Development Corp. (1946–1972) and, in those 26 years, increased company assets from $3 million to more than $400 million. In 1979, Fortune Magazine elected him to the 'Hall of Fame' for business leadership.

"Among his decorations are the Distinguished Service Medal, Commander of the British Empire and France's Legion of Honor, awarded to him and his wife, the former Edna Allen, who died in 1978. The Doriots are one of the few couples thus decorated....
