During my teen years I was plagued off and on by an extreme case of eczema. Doctors could not cure it. As a young woman, I felt my appearance was a disaster.

At one time when the suffering was intense, I told my dad that I could not ever go back to school because I did not want to face people. He was very understanding, and made arrangements for me to stay with my grandparents, who were both Christian Scientists. With my grandmother I began to read Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy for the first time. We studied especially the chapter "Prayer." Through this study I lost all fear about how I looked. And by the end of one week the physical improvement was so great that I was ready to return to school.

The complete healing, however, did not take place until many years later. Something from Second Corinthians sums it all up for me: "Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" (10:3–5). I needed to bring my own thoughts into the understanding of Christ, and to "walk in the Spirit"—in the knowledge of God.
