I was called to active duty in the Army in March 1943, during World War II. During a physical examination, a doctor told me I was rejected because of a kidney disorder. I was very disappointed, and asked for another exam the next morning. This request was granted.
I immediately called home to ask my father, a Christian Scientist, to pray for me. He assured me of my perfection right then, as God's image, and gave me other spiritual truths to consider. I spent the day in my bunk reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
The following morning I failed the second examination, but successfully pleaded for one more chance. Again I called my father, who reaffirmed the fact that I was the pure idea of God; there could be nothing to impede my progress, because of this spiritual fact. I felt that the motive to serve my country was honest and right. Again I spent the day studying and praying.
