The Sentinel: a magazine for the whole family

Our two children grew up thinking of the Christian Science Sentinel as a friend they could count on. When the latest copy arrived in the mail each week, they knew it was fine for them to open it up and take it to their room—because it was a magazine that belonged to the whole family.

They'd usually look to see if there were any special children's articles in the Sentinel. if there were, they'd want one of us to sit down and help them read these articles. Then sometimes they'd want to read them again at bedtime. And they liked other parts of the Sentinel, too—like the testimonies, where people tell how they've been healed by praying to God.

We never talked much about it, but I think our children just expected that what they read in the Sentinel would make them feel good about their lives—about themselves, about school, about their friends, about how much God loved them. And time and again, they had healings from praying about ideas they'd found in this little magazine.
