For fifty-seven years I have depended solely upon my faith...
For fifty-seven years I have depended solely upon my faith in God to meet every need. My understanding of God began in the Christian Science Sunday School. The spiritually scientific truths I learned were practiced with the support and guidance of my parents, who helped me to rely completely on God. This built a firm foundation.
I saw a proof of God's power to heal when I was about thirteen. While on a camping trip I was exposed to poison ivy, and a rash developed on most of my body. I was able to phone my parents to ask for their prayers and to request transportation home. Before we left the camp, my mother assured me that God's presence was everywhere, that right then and there I was God's image and reflection, and that I could not be separated from His care. My mother continued to pray for me when I reached home. She explained that the joyful experience of that camping trip could not result in illness, citing this statement from Science and Health: "... joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy ...." Shortly afterward the rash disappeared.
As I grew in understanding, I was more able to pray for myself. I have had numerous experiences of protection, especially during a period of twenty-two consecutive months in a combat zone during World War II.
