A notice from the Office of the Clerk of The Mother Church
The Office of the Clerk is aware of an increasing number of mailings being sent to church members and branch churches listed in The Christian Science Journal and The Herald of Christian Science from individuals and groups soliciting financial aid for a variety of purposes. Some falsely claim affiliation with The Mother Church while others appeal to the Christian values of Christian Scientists to elicit financial help.
Although many of these solicitors may be serious students of Christian Science, others are not. Those who are listed in the directory in authorized Christian Science periodicals should be aware that their names and addresses become available to the broad and diverse readership these publications now have throughout the world.
Giving financial assistance has not always proved to be the best way of furthering healing activity among students of Christian Science. Instead of promoting spiritual progress, these funds sometimes have tended to divert thought from the primary healing mission of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy once wrote to a student, "Our churches spring up spontaneously from the soil of healing."
