"Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences." Those two sentences from Science and Health (the textbook of Christian Science) truly describe my introduction to Christian Science. I had been a diligent Bible student all of my life but had started to feel like a weary wanderer in the desert.

I had asked God to show me what I should do to find that "missing something" in my religious experience, when I accepted a piano student who turned out to be a Christian Scientist. It became obvious to me that this individual didn't come with the usual doubts associated with an adult music student, and so I began to question her. She offered me Christian Science literature to read, and I drank that "cup of cold water" to the last drop.

Right after receiving and reading my first copy of Science and Health, I had a healing of injuries from a bicycle accident. Very early one morning I had been riding into town, when I saw a logging truck coming off a mountain road and a car running a stop sign; both were coming toward me very quickly. It became obvious that there was nowhere for me to go. In an instant I had the clearest, calmest conviction ever. It was as if a voice spoke to me and said, "You are not a mortal; you are not flesh and bones. Nothing can hurt you, no matter how it may look." The next moment I was on the ground, looking up at the underside of a car fender. The car had stopped just before its wheels would have run over me and the bike. The truck had veered off onto the side of the road. I never felt any fear nor any impact from falling. I was able to crawl out from under the car and help the driver, who was very upset.
