Over twenty years ago during a school vacation, I stayed with a friend in a large city. A very difficult experience resulted, in which Christian Science was of great help. One day after my friend left for work, I decided to spend the day in her apartment; however I changed my mind and went out. Later, upon returning to the apartment with my sister, I discovered my friend murdered.
As I ran down the stairs for help, I immediately declared "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The immediacy of God's ever-present love was so powerful that I knew my friend's spiritual life could not have been taken. She was as close to God, divine Life, as she had always been. The love and strength my sister expressed were a source of comfort and inspiration from God.
But still, shock and horror filled my thought. The brutal evidence of death, police questioning, and front-page newspaper coverage all made the crime vivid. A loving friend pointed out a strengthening statement from Science and Health: "We may well be perplexed at human fear; and still more astounded at hatred, which lifts its hydra head, showing its horns in the many inventions of evil. But why should we stand aghast at nothingness?"
