[The following is a newspaper account of the experience of a Christian Scientist, Cheryl Churchill, who became ill shortly before Christmas in 1990. She was taken to a hospital emergency room.]

"The emergency room doctor examined her and gave the diagnosis of Guillain-Barre syndrome, an extremely rare neurological disorder that is sometimes fatal. The emergency room doctor called in a neurologist, who confirmed the diagnosis. [No treatment was offered.]...

"The doctors [predicted] at least a two-week stay and then an eight-month recovery period with physical therapy. Although she appreciated the care and concern shown her at Kaiser [the hospital], she decided she needed to get into a Christian Science nursing facility if she could.
