Growing up in the 90s

God's governing truth heals

The summer of my freshman year in high school, I was a counselor at a camp sponsored by a girls' organization. The camp was on a lake, but it was close enough to the ocean for us to take day trips to the beach every few weeks. This was usually everyone's favorite trip. We loved the beach and the freedom from the routine of camp activity periods and meals.

Our first trip of the summer started out great. But on the ride home a number of girls complained about being sunburned. It had been very hot that day, and this didn't seem too unusual. But by the time we got back to camp the situation seemed more serious. Several girls got sick at our flag-lowering ceremony. By the evening, so many campers were ill that there was no more room in the infirmary and the girls were sent to their cabins for the night.

The camp nurse met with the counselors and told them what to do if anyone in their cabin was sick. She mentioned that several doctors had come to help out and that the sickness was a reaction to being in so much sun. After she left I was really scared. I wasn't feeling well either, and I began to worry about my younger sister, who was in another cabin.
