I was brought up by parents who knew only to live a sincere, straightforward life. Later I was married and ten years after that we had our first child. At that time I did not believe in God and had full faith in human will. I was pushing with all my might in the wrong direction.
The year our son was four, I gave birth to a little girl. The next year it became clear to me that I needed something beyond human will to solve my problems, and I was drawn to what I faintly knew of God. I thought then that it would be best to send our son to a Sunday School of a Christian church. So I asked a friend if she knew of a church in the neighborhood. She said she could take me to her own church, if I would like that.
The church that I visited with my two children, with my heart pounding with hope and some fear, was First Church of Christ, Scientist, Tokyo. I still vividly remember what refreshing spirit I gained when I read the inscriptions on the wall: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"—Christ Jesus' words from the book of John—and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."
