Around November 1952, one Wednesday I visited a chemical...
Around November 1952, one Wednesday I visited a chemical fertilizer manufacturing plant in a suburb of Tokyo, to repair the machinery. Later I was feeling ill, which I blamed on having breathed a large amount of ammonia gas. That night I attended the testimony meeting of our branch church, and while listening to the testimonies, I tried to pray, but the situation did not improve. When the meeting was over, I asked a Christian Science practitioner who was there to help me.
She pointed calmly to the words of Christ Jesus on the wall of the auditorium: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." She told me that I must know the truth of who I was as God's child but that I would never reach this truth by going over the lie that I was sick. The fact was, I couldn't be sick, I couldn't be less than free, because I was as immune to illness as God, my source and Father. In a moment, I clearly apprehended what she had told me and I was well. Every symptom just vanished.
In my business life, Christian Science brought healing to every need I faced during a long career. I know it was Science that enabled me to overcome (to stay beyond) the apparent clash of Christian Science and business culture, which gives much weight to social drinking among colleagues. Also, I am deeply grateful for all the wise guidance and reliable support I have known in business as a result of studying Christian Science. Several years ago, I retired from a leading industrial company, where I developed a new line of business—of designing and building jet engines—and served on its board of directors for many years. During this period of transition, I prayed, together with my wife, who is also a Christian Scientist, to know that there is a place for me where I can be of service to mankind. Then, unexpectedly, I was elected to be one of a few members from the industrial sector on the Science Council of Japan. My field of work became more diversified and more international, taking me abroad more often for research or lecturing. It is enabling me to share some of Japan's business know-how with the developing world.
