When I was eleven years old, my mother was healed overnight, through the prayers of a Christian Science practitioner, of the desire to smoke cigarettes. Seeing the results of this religion, my mother became an ardent student. Although my father did not take up the study of Christian Science, he allowed my sister and me to make our own choice regarding religion.
I attended a Christian Science Sunday School for a while, but then I attended other Protestant Sunday Schools and finally stopped attending any church at all. At this point I began smoking and drinking and taking drugs. (In college I quit smoking but still drank and took drugs.)
