When I was a sophomore in college, I developed a very severe gum condition. My mouth was so sore that I could take in only liquids. A dentist said that if I did not have medical attention immediately, all my teeth would eventually be lost.

I decided to rely upon Christian Science. In talking with me, a Christian Science practitioner pointed out that true substance is spiritual and quoted Mrs. Eddy's words "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (Science and Health, p. vii). All this time I was able to attend classes and keep a normal schedule.

A couple of days passed and there did not seem to be improvement. At the time I was rinsing my mouth with salt water. The dentist had suggested I do this to help keep my mouth clean when I was unable to brush. I came to see, however, that no matter how innocent a little salt water seemed, it was still for me in these circumstances a subtle reliance on a material substance instead of on God. I found this statement on page 301 of Science and Health: "As God is substance and man is the divine image and likeness, man should wish for, and in reality has, only the substance of good, the substance of Spirit, not matter."
