I had been swimming in competition for two and one half...

I had been swimming in competition for two and one half years. Sometimes I had done well and other times I hadn't. There was one competition coming up, the Australian Age Championships, which I really wanted to do well at. I had been trying to do qualifying times for two years.

On the last competition that I would be able to qualify in, I missed out. I really was upset. My mum tried to cheer me up by saying, "You can try again next year." The next week in training my coach told me I had, in fact, qualified, but in a shorter pool. Now I had to do it in an Olympic-size pool.

As the time got closer, I tried harder in training. When the day came, as the races began I started to get shaky. My mum had written a note on several spiritual truths I should think of. Error was telling me I was tired and scared, but I kept reading those notes. I read that I was God's perfect child, His creation, and I thought of the Lord's Prayer (see Matt. 6:9–13). I knew that the strength I needed came from God, and that He was always with me.
