I Grew up in a small town in which my family were the only Christian Scientists. My parents raised me with much love, and their examples instilled in me an appreciation of integrity, freedom, and excellence. When I went away to college, I attended the Sunday School of a local branch church. There I had a teacher who answered many of my questions about God and whose love of the truth inspired me to apply for class instruction in Christian Science. After college graduation I did have class. I am so grateful for this and for each of the endless opportunities we have daily to learn more of the truth of being.

About five years ago I had a healing during which I learned more than I ever had before of God and man. At the time, I had married, was teaching fourth grade, and had just begun a term as First Reader in my branch church. What started as slight symptoms quickly became a much more serious condition that left me hardly able to talk, eat, or sleep. I lost weight, and increasingly I had to ask for substitutes for my school and church work.

But worse than the physical discomfort was the fear I felt day and night. I didn't even know exactly what I was afraid of, but it was more than just of the illness. Everything looked bleak to me. I felt completely apart from God; in fact, I wasn't even sure I believed in God anymore.
