I became acquainted with Christian Science while still in my teens. Within a few months I was severely injured in an accident, and my employer was so concerned that she called a doctor, who had me taken to a hospital. After examining me the doctor said there was little chance I would live through the night, and that if I did, I would require at least two operations and even then could only hope to live as a semi-invalid. Aside from stitches to close the wound, there was no other medical attention. With the help of a Christian Science practitioner, the doctor's predictions were disproved. Later a physical examination for employment insurance showed that I was in perfect physical condition.
After our children had left home and were married, my husband passed on quite suddenly. At the time I had made concrete efforts to overcome struggles with poor health, a sense of weariness, and the temptation to think the best years of my life were behind me. However, his passing was more than I could cope with. I wanted to give up and follow him. Yet common sense soon indicated that I must face up to this false claim of life in matter.
When I first began the study of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, one of the sentences I underlined and memorized was this one (p. 261): "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." Within days this statement became a guide, and the spiritual truths that I had read, declared, and clung to at an earlier time again filled my consciousness.
