"The fear left me and the fever left my son"

One day my son's teacher summoned me to school because the boy was ill with a high fever. Politely declining the offer to give him medication, I silently affirmed man's God-given health. Then I tried to find a place to talk with the youngster and to pray quietly, but this was difficult, as the nurse and teachers were very concerned.

So I took my son home. We talked about God's love for man and His caring law that affords us dominion over anything unlike Him. In our real being, we are all God's spiritual ideas, reflecting His perfection. After quieting the child, I turned to the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I also read recent Christian Science periodicals in an effort to spiritualize thought. I was striving to remove any suggestion of fear, and to be a living witness to the potency of divine Truth, the power that glorifies God by bringing healing to the body. The book of Job gives this assurance (11:15): "...thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear." Passages from that week's Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly on the subject "Adam and Fallen Man" had specific meaning for me, especially this one (Ps. 143:8): "Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee." I listened, watched, and prayed, steadfast and sure that my prayer would be answered.

During the night my son woke in a feverish state. I embraced him, conscious that we were both held forever in immortal Love's tender embrace. I spoke God's Word out loud, insisting that He has made man in His own likeness and given him dominion over all things (see Gen. 1). I clung to the fact that it is the law of infinite Spirit that frees us from the impositions of the flesh. Proverbs encourages us to realize (26:2): "As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come." There is no subtle curse afflicting God's man; he is governed entirely by the divine law, which is solely good.
