Have a Good Sleep!

The renewal and relaxation resulting from periods of restful sleep is a normal human need. The extent of this need varies with individuals. Some require a lot of sleep, and are tense and disoriented without it, while others can carry on happily and tirelessly with very little. But regardless of the time involved, we all want our sleep to be sound and restful.

The crowded, harsh, hurried atmosphere of modern life disturbs the rest of many. They wake up unrefreshed or fail utterly to fall asleep. The fears, angers, and stresses of the day sink deep into thought, robbing people of the inner tranquillity that must precede real rest. This widespread malaise has triggered the wholesale use of sleeping pills. These seem to drug the human mind into an instant but short–lived quietude, while leaving the real cause uncorrected. They trap one in an ever–increasing dependence on chemicals for peace of mind.

The study and application of Christian Science strikes at the root of this trouble. It stills the human mind through spiritual enlightenment and prepares it for normal rest. The writer of the book of Proverbs speaks of this light in terms of wisdom and understanding, which have their source in God. He urges, "Let not them depart from thine eyes. ... Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely. ... When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet."Prov. 3:21, 24;
