Break the Spell!

Deep in the Haitian jungle a small party of travelers were huddled in a hut. Through the window they could see a group of natives gathered around a voodoo woman, who was peering at the hut and chanting as she cast a spell. Engulfed by fear, the people in the hut felt themselves yielding to the evil incantation. Then one of them rallied and exclaimed, "This is ridiculous! There is no power in voodoo!" Instantly the spell was broken. The darkness dissipated, the voodoo woman and the natives disappeared, the hut vanished, and the party found themselves standing in bright sunshine.

At this point the sleeper awakened to realize that this dramatic incident had been nothing but a dream. Then he thought how perfectly the dream had illustrated the effectiveness of refuting hypnotic suggestion with a fearless affirmation of the truth. One cannot be hypnotized as long as he is thinking a fact. A mentality that is constructively employed is not subject to mesmeric influence. The clear thinker controls his own destiny.

Christian Science teaches that God is divine intelligence, the source of all right ideas. When one realizes that divine Mind is controlling his thought, he establishes a basis from which he can confidently reject all aggressive mental suggestions that would influence him to believe that he is a fearful, insecure mortal. Instead, he can declare his immunity from such mental miasma by steadfastly knowing his true relationship to God as the perfect expression of perfect Mind.
