I was raised in Christian Science, and though I never strayed...

I was raised in Christian Science, and though I never strayed very far from its teachings, I did not really appreciate its magnitude until after I had had class instruction. Christian Science can and should govern the minutiae as well as the momentous occurrences of our lives, if we apply it. This immediacy of God's government and love and protection are what I am most grateful for.

Along this line, two summers ago, our youngest child, then five years old, was severely bitten on the eye by a dog she had been fondling. I was at the back of our home, playing tennis. On that particular day two of the others playing were surgeons. One was an eye specialist. The wound on my child's eye seemed very severe. The neighbor to whom the dog belonged was most frightened and begged me to "do something." He knew we were Christian Scientists, and I told him all would be well and that the child would be cared for in the only way we knew—through Christian Science treatment and through God's ever-present Love. I calmed him and he left.

Immediately I called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. Her first words to me were, "It has never happened to God's child." She told me to leave the little one in God's care and to go about caring for my guests. I never once doubted that all was well. I was calm and confident of God's presence as I had never been before. I cleansed the wound with water and quieted the child, who shortly fell asleep. I returned to my guests. Nothing was said until the little one appeared with a pair of dark glasses on. When asked, I explained what had happened, but in no detail. I had learned that the less we rehearse and review evil, the easier it is to allay fear.
