Towards the end of the Second...

Towards the end of the Second World War, while I was investigating various religions and philosophies in search of a satisfying meaning to life, a former colleague, to whom I shall ever be grateful, lent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures'" by Mary Baker Eddy. This work I read with keen interest, especially the chapters entitled "Prayer" and "Christian Science Practice." The testimonies in the section headed "Fruitage" are from those who received healing through perusal of the book, and I found these particularly convincing; they did much to overcome the skepticism I had previously felt in regard to Christian Science.

While I felt that there was much in the book with which I could concur, a training in natural science and orthodox medical thinking made unreserved acceptance of the highly original teachings of Science difficult for me. However, in spite of this, I was conscious of a great change taking place in my outlook, and before I had finished reading the book I was healed completely of smoking, a habit of long standing and one which hitherto I had been unable to break. Social drinking was discontinued also from that time.

To my surprise, I later found that a painful intestinal disorder, which I had had for about thirteen years and which medical treatment alleviated only slightly, had disappeared entirely. With this trouble had gone also chronic constipation, which had afflicted me since childhood.
