To Our Readers

We are pleased to present with this issue the new small size Christian Science Sentinel which was announced at the Annual Meeting in June, 1941. Those who are responsible for publishing the periodicals have given prayerful study to providing a more convenient form in which to offer this weekly missionary, and as a result the Sentinel comes to you in a new and up-to-date format.

The amount of reading material is the same, the size of type has not been changed, and the cover design remains within the framework approved by Mrs. Eddy. The national defense requirements have caused a change in the color of the paper. Beginning with this issue, the volume year has been changed to coincide with the calendar year.

It is timely to review the beginnings of the Christian Science Sentinel. It was first published on September 1, 1898, as the Christian Science Weekly. The first page contained a salutatory message explaining the purpose of the new periodical, including its relation to The Christian Science Journal. The issue of January 26. 1899, appeared under the title Christian Science Sentinel, and the motto, "What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch," was added. Both the new title and the motto were chosen by Mrs. Eddy.
