Before taking up the study of Christian Science, I knew...
Before taking up the study of Christian Science, I knew nothing about God. Through the study of the Bible, and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I have gained a slight understanding of God and man's relationship to Him. This understanding has enabled me to solve many problems and has proved to me that God is the only physician.
A few years ago I had a healing of what would be called stiffening of the muscles. This condition so incapacitated me that one morning I could not get out of bed. I did not call a practitioner. Instead, I put into practice what I had learned as a result of my study of Christian Science. While I was earnestly working and praying, this verse from the Bible came to me: "Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk." I saw that to arise meant to ascend consciously, to become mentally active, to turn from material sense to spiritual sense, "to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health (p. 566), "As the children of Israel were guided triumphantly through the Red Sea, the dark ebbing and flowing tides of human fear,—as they were led through the wilderness, walking wearily through the great desert of human hopes, and anticipating the promised joy,—so shall the spiritual idea guide all right desires in their passage from sense to Soul, from a material sense of existence to the spiritual, up to the glory prepared for them who love God." The complete healing came while I was about my household duties, and I was able to fulfill all the responsibilities which I had for that day. For this healing and for many others I am very grateful.
My desire is to know more about this wonderful religion and to give more service to this great Cause. Freely I have received, freely I desire to give. For membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for the privilege of class instruction, I am truly thankful.—(Miss) Gertrude M. Stobaeus, South Orange, New Jersey.
