In the report of an alleged violation of quarantine regulations...

Daily Review

In the report of an alleged violation of quarantine regulations by a family at Seaside, in your recent issue, occurs the statement, "In one case the child having the disease was allowed to attend school, the mother being a Christian Scientist, it is said, who did not believe in the existence of disease." The woman in question, in fairness, cannot be described as a Christian Scientist. She has been looking into Christian Science during the past two months, but is not a member of the Christian Science organization, and is not familiar with its by-laws or its church activities. She had no Christian Science practitioner helping her with her children at the time the quarantine was declared. If she had had a practitioner, there is no doubt but that the condition would have been reported to the health officer. As to the statement that she allowed an infected child to attend school because as a Christian Scientist she did not believe in the existence of disease, this is a complete misapprehension of the teaching of Christian Science.

Christian Science holds with the Scripture, that man is made in the image and likeness of God and therefore is perfect and eternal, experiencing no discord or disease. From this it follows that in the absolute sense there is no disease; but Christian Science recognizes disease as a mortal condition, to be rejected and destroyed in accordance with the law of God, in the same manner as Christ Jesus destroyed disease. The mathematician, while understanding that the science of mathematics includes no errors, does not deny or disregard the fact that mistakes may occur in computing a mathematical problem. In fact, the mistake must first be recognized before it can be corrected. Finally, both the county health officer and the district attorney frankly state that they have found Christian Scientists always obedient to quarantine regulations.
