Several years ago I was suffering from tuberculosis, having hemorrhages and all the other ills which accompany it. My doctor gave me very little hope for recovery and I became very unhappy and miserable. I continually longed to be well and strong again but did not believe it would come to pass. I had thought of praying, but did not know how; moreover, I did not believe it would help, because I had always been told that God sent disease and death. I believe now that my longing for health, which was a right desire, was prayer, for soon afterwards I was led to Christian Science. I immediately borrowed from the library a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and what a blessing it has proved to be! It certainly is a key which unlocks the Scriptures, for the Bible became a new book to me, whereas before I did not care to read it.

One day while reading Science and Health I felt very sick, so I put the book down and lay on the bed. Presently I picked it up again, and this is what I read: "If the reader of this book observes a great stir throughout his whole system, and certain moral and physical symptoms seem aggravated, these indications are favorable. Continue to read, and the book will become the physician, allaying the tremor which Truth often brings to error when destroying it" (Science and Health, p. 422). I realized that I was experiencing what Mrs. Eddy terms chemicalization, of which she says: "By chemicalization I mean the process which mortal mind and body undergo in the change of belief from a material to a spiritual basis" (Science and Health, p. 168). I continued to read and when I closed the book that evening I was well and I felt wonderfully free and happy. The fear was gone, also the disease. I told everybody, and although they did not believe I was well they knew from the expression on my face that some change had taken place. I have remained well ever since. Truth is my only medicine for all ills and I have made many demonstrations for myself. On page 344 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says: "There are various methods of treating disease, which are not included in the commonly accepted systems; but there is only one which should be presented to the whole world, and that is the Christian Science which Jesus preached and practised and left to us as his rich legacy." I wholly agree with her. I am striving to live so as to be worthy to be called a Christian Scientist.
