On consideration of the Lesson-Sermon entitled "Christian Science,"...
On consideration of the Lesson-Sermon entitled "Christian Science," and just what it means to me, I feel that it is time to send a testimony for publication, that it may reach a wider field than the usual Wednesday evening meeting. In the spring of 1914 I was handed a copy of The Christian Science Journal containing an article which irritated me so much that I undertook to procure all the "unauthorized" books on the subject of Christian Science and began reading up. Then I was shown that if I desired authoritative information on a subject—as mathematics, music, engineering, and the like, I would naturally inquire of some one qualified to teach it; so I went to the nearest reading room and borrowed a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and started reading, and I read all night for many nights.
As the son of a Baptist minister I had been actively engaged in church and Sunday school work for years, and was even then secretary of a local church, but the utter logic of Mrs. Eddy's statements was irresistible. During the first few days I was healed of the desire for liquor which had been with me for fourteen years and had caused much sorrow to my parents and to my wife. I then tested my small perception of the truth at every opportunity, in minor accidents, aches and pains, cuts and bruises, and found that Christian Science really "worked."
On severing my connection with my old church, I was much impressed with the general atmosphere of the local Christian Science church, for all one came in touch with radiated cheerfulness, gladness, harmony, and love. During three and one-half years in the submarine service, I had many opportunities for testing the healing power of Christian Science, and at one period was the only member of a ship's crew who had not been under medical treatment or inoculated for something or other. At the time of the Halifax explosion I had an apparently miraculous escape, and know that only a realization of God's nearness saved me from apparent destruction. I was afterward a witness to some of the work done by Christian Scientists at that time, which work fulfilled my expectations.
