A True Soldier

Sometimes in the experience of a student of Christian Science, when a claim of sickness and suffering or lack and limitation seems tenacious, discouragement comes and puts up its plea: Why struggle on? What is to be gained by it? To those who are looking only for comfort in matter it seems foolish to work on a physical condition when, to their sense, some material remedy would tide the person over the difficulty much more quickly. But to the student of Christian Science who thoroughly understands what his engagement is, there is no question of any other way but to meet each enemy that comes, as a soldier fighting in the battle of Armageddon must fight, not with carnal weapons but with the truth.

Through the ages, mortals have laid down their arms, given up to the autocracy of sin, disease, and death. Jesus, the Christ, came with the gospel, or glad tidings, that Spirit is supreme and that every man, through the supremacy of Spirit, may overcome the autocracy of the carnal mind and be free. To-day Christian Science is here teaching men to use the weapons of Spirit as never before. As in every other conflict where men fight in a just cause, the cause is all that really counts. A constantly increasing army proving that Spirit is supreme must bring about that condition prophesied by Isaiah, "And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord," and told of in Hebrews, "And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest." Each one who refuses to let a claim of error govern him and proves that through the government of the divine Mind he need not submit to this god of fear, has helped others to win their battles against the autocracy of this unreal master.

In 1866 only one in all the earth, Mary Baker Eddy, saw this truth. She proved what she saw and taught others to prove it. To-day thousands are fighting valiantly, each in his place, to withstand the enemy with the weapons that Christian Science has provided them. Mrs. Eddy once said to a class of students (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 279), "We to-day, in this class-room, are enough to convert the world if we are of one Mind."
