Christian Science came to me at a time when I was desperately...

Christian Science came to me at a time when I was desperately in need of help. I was left with no income, ill, and very unhappy. It was necessary for me to earn my living, and I was anxious to carry on my professional work, and yet I was generally physically unfit to do the work when it came to me. In fact, to human sense my life seemed to have gone completely and hopelessly awry; but Christian Science came to me, and I began to learn what Life really is.

One day while at a friend's house I met a Christian Scientist, who asked me if I would like to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, and I went, not with any thought that Christian Science would help me, but simply out of a great curiosity to know what were the teachings of this new religion. As I listened to the reading from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I knew that I was listening to the truth. One statement made such a deep impression on me that I have never forgotten it. It was the passage on page 202 of Science and Health where Mrs. Eddy says: "Common opinion admits that a man may take cold in the act of doing good, and that this cold may produce fatal pulmonary disease; as though evil could overbear the law of Love, and check the reward for doing good. In the Science of Christianity, Mind—omnipotence—has all-power, assigns sure rewards to righteousness, and shows that matter can neither heal nor make sick, create nor destroy." The logic of that statement seemed to me so clear, so undeniable, that I wondered how I could ever have believed anything to the contrary. After the meeting I borrowed a copy of Science and Health and began reading it on the way home, and for a fortnight I just read and read at every available moment. I shall never forget the light and joy that came to me during that time, the feeling of well-being and of freedom, the sense of being lifted above the pains and cares which had been a burden to me. Christian Science had indeed opened the door, and I had caught a glimpse of the kingdom of heaven, and man's inheritance as a child of God.

Since that time the way has not always seemed easy. Sometimes there have been "lions in the path" trying to hinder one's progress, in the shape of discouragement, fear of lack, limitation; but I have learned that as we trust in it completely, and strive to put its teachings into practice, Christian Science is an unfailing remedy; because it teaches us to understand God as Love, the divine Principle that never fails but is all-powerful and ever present to heal and to bless. I have been healed of eczema which I had had from infancy, headaches, a very violent form of nasal catarrh, and other physical ailments. Christian Science has given me health, strength, a sufficient supply for all my needs, work which I love, and a peace and joy which cannot be described in words.
