I have long deferred giving my testimony, for the happy...
I have long deferred giving my testimony, for the happy reason that from a wealth of blessings it has seemed difficult to compress even a few into a small space. I was dissatisfied with the fact that the church was not trying to heal. It was my desire, although active in a denominational church, that if I should ever encounter a religious movement which was fulfilling the Christian requirement of healing that I should know whether or not it was Christlike. I gladly investigated Christian Science, and as soon as I was assured that its healing work was of God I accepted its teachings. Frequent attacks of temporary loss of voice and of hearing have been overcome, and a general improvement of health has followed. One experience for which I shall ever be thankful was the quick healing of a severely sprained ankle. It seemed necessary to ask for help, and a telegram was sent in the early afternoon to a practitioner. By four o'clock the effect of the injury was practically overcome, and by nine o'clock I was wholly free. The next day I went for a long walk on a rough mountain side, climbing over bowlders and large logs, at no time feeling even a slight sense of pain.
I enjoy Christian Science because its teachings can be applied to every phase of everyday life. In 1917, when rising prices became conspicuous, I felt that if I were loyal to my understanding of Principle I could escape this difficulty. Early in September, as I paid for a sack of flour I noted that the price was thirty cents higher than I had paid a month before. I remarked to the grocer that the increase averaged a cent a day. He told me that each day during the month he had received a card raising the price. As I left the store I began to ponder on economic conditions and to inquire how I might apply the truth to escape paying tribute to greed. I knew that I had not reached a point in spiritual growth where I need not eat; to lesson my use of flour would be limitation, which is foreign to God's man. Then with a joyous uplift the story of the window's meal came to my help, and, realizing that the same law is available to-day, I asked myself, "If the window's meal wasted not, why mine?" The whole feeling of being helpless before a fluctuating market was destroyed. I was released from the belief that I needed a sack of flour each month. Almost seven weeks later I ordered another sack, having forgotten until then that the flour had not been consumed in a month as usual. There had been no limitation in the use.
Following this step, innumerable proofs of protection came. One pleasing experience occurred in the renting of a house at a price which seemed satisfactory. On returning to the real estate office to make a deposit, much to our surprise the agent had refigured the rent, offering it for twenty per cent less. Later, when the property was purchased, the owner volunteered to sell at a normal price when he might well, in the midst of a real estate boom, have asked an inflated price. On one occasion a grocer who had added a bill of groceries, suddenly drew a line through the amount, and remarked, "I will protect you on these goods; they were bought at a low price and were repriced yesterday."
