IN TUNE WITH GOD

In tune with GodHis angels with us fare,No fear of sin or sickness can alarm;Safe folded in His loving careThere's naught can harm:Welcome the chastening rod.

THE FATHER'S LOVE

Dear little bird, lie still, lie still,O fear-hushed, wounded, broken thing,That beat against the tempest's rageAnd fell to earth, all quivering.

MESSENGERS

Just because a little snowdrop raised her head above the snow,Just because a dancing sunbeam touched a pale cheek into glow,Just because one bird is singing in the woodland sweet and clear,We have caught the whispered message, "Lift your heads, for spring is here!"

TIME'S TYRANNY

Impelled by youth's impatienceAnd dreams of joys to be,I urged old Time to hasten,—But never hastened he.

SONGS OF JOY

When swept death's sable pinionsAcross my love-lit skies,My harp was hushed to silence,While tear mists veiled my eyes.

THE NEW YEAR

I.

A SPRING THOUGHT

I stood alone with the sunlit peaceOf woods in springtime; the warm quiet airLay like a tender presence on the trees,And leaned low down to greet the waking flowers; And all the turmoil of unquiet hours,The disappointed, feverish search for ease,Dropped, like a garment one has ceased to wear,Before the young year's promise of increase.

FORWARD!

Forward! Whatever clouds are overhead,However dim the stars above us shine,We stumble when our steps by fear are led;The only guide we need is Love divine!

SUNBEAMS

When lying in my little room,My heart would fain be filled with gloom,But for the sunbeams on the wallWhich through the crystal windows fall!

WHAT WOULD YOU GIVE?

What seekest thou, my friend?

A LIGHT AT SEA

When shadows crept o'er sea and strand,And somber lay the waters still,With head down-dropped upon my handI mused beside my window-sill.

"WORK—WORK—WORK."*

Should we a golden apple seeOn topmost bough of highest tree,Would we e'er heed the height, or strainInvolved, that golden fruit to gain?
