The Gift

I have besought my Father for a gift,For He has said, "Ask what you will of Me;"And knowing that I am His son and heirI bridled not my craving, nor did wearA suppliant look, but gazed, courageous-eyed,Up to His throne and cried:"Give me the greatest blessing that You hold,Nor fame, nor length of days, nor useless gold; The gift of gifts I ask You for my part—'An understanding heart.

Alway

May I think always loving thoughtsThe kind word say,And sing most blithely, cheerily,When days are gray;Bring happy smilesInto the eyes of every child,Not just to-day—alway!

The Upward Path

Wherever Thou wouldst have me serve Thee, Father,Fill Thou my heart with joy to do Thy will; For I would follow, not with lagging footsteps,The inner voice of Truth, so small, so still.

Watching

I am waiting, O my Father,For Thy thoughts to come to me.

Love's Recompense

I never smelt the woods so sweet,I never saw the birds so fleet,Until I stooped and washed the feetOf a weary brother of mine.

The Awakening

First came the hungriness:The costly foods and wines which had been his,So long as he had wherewithal to pay,Were now denied him; and the tasteless husks,Left by the swine which he was set to tend,He dared not take to still the hunger-pang.

Child of God

Hark, child of God!This babbling mortal is not thy true self,The image pure of Love!

The Light of Life

When a man shall come in his journeyTo the mythical threescore and ten,Should he yield consent to a mortal lawThat would limit the lives of men?

An Open Door

An open door into the treasure house of Truth,God hath before thee set;Thou shalt go in and out, and gather priceless pearlsTo pay the world's great debt.
