From Church

The demand for church

I like to think of each church that grows up in a community as that community's answered prayer for the presence of the saving Christ—the message of God's love for humanity.

MY HOME AND CHURCH

This is my home,—the consciousness of good,Filled with the love of all earth's brotherhood—A quiet resting-place, safe and secure;A home which hath foundations and is sure.

BROTHERHOOD

There was a time when, in my selfish pride,I watched the world go by.
Sometimes, I ween, the Master smiled—There budded in his eyes a glowWhich on his lips bloomed sweet and slowTo win a little child.

The wisdom of this world, so Paul once said,Is foolishness with God! And still men poreO'er lettered Dead Sea fruit and sigh the moreFor something lacking in the volumes read; There's a heart-hunger that demandeth bread! There is a thirsting for the perfect law;Yet vainly searching man tries many a door,Only to turn away uncomforted.

ILLUMINATION

Night covered me.

REASSURANCE

God's thought is not our thought, His infinite careDeviseth ways and means beyond our ken,And all unseen by our blind selves, as when—In spite of seeming darkness here or there—A waiting glory showeth us how fairHis slightest promise is; how groping menMay know His tender love, or now or then,And in this love find rest beyond compare.

ATTAINMENT

No longer strive thyself to run in moldPreparéd for another man; nor makeA model for thyself; but gladly takeThe matchless form that man has borne of oldWhen morning stars with song did dawn enfold,And sons of God with shouts of joy did breakThe silence of the spheres and echoes wakeThat through the æons ring in dale and wold.

THE VOICE OF TRUTH

As, looking overhead, sometimes we seeTwo galaxies of clouds, not keeping companyBut going diverse ways;As listening to music, played in many partsClear to the listening ear and gentle hearts,Beneath and quite apart, no other sound can drownA low, sweet, tender monotone:So, when Love friends together brings,To outward ear discussing many things,But still their hearts unite in universal love,Finding its tranquil in God above,Be silent thou, and bend a listening ear!Apart from mortal sense, a song of peace thou'lt hear,God's undercurrent in the mental air.

THE EMPTY TOMB

Why weepest thou?
