Eye on the World: new UN climate change report

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a new report on the predicted impacts of global warming, the first comprehensive report since 2007. The report reiterated that climate change should be expected to cause more extreme weather events worldwide — but that governments, companies, and individuals can, with careful planning, adapt to some of the changes by growing new crops or building more durable housing.

Even a worldwide issue like climate change isn’t beyond God’s control. “Let’s turn down the heat” explains how we can each pray about the climate: by thinking about cause and effect as spiritual, not material. Rather than viewing the world as a physical system vulnerable to physical harm, we can remember that it’s God’s creation — an idea that is complete and intact, and that manifests His love.

Climate change: what I could do” discusses how we can shift our thinking to a more God-centered view of the environment. The writer, a professor of climatology, notes that when we understand God as the real source of power in our lives, our eyes are opened to solutions that both heal the environment and assure a good quality of life for everyone. She writes, “Under God’s government, the expression of divine power does not and cannot harm us or our brothers and sisters in other nations.”
