Eye on the World: Eye on energy
From subsidies for fossil fuels, to solar and wind power, to mileage standards for cars, to the construction and maintenance of oil pipelines, energy policy has been in the headlines a lot.
“Clean” energy sources like wind and solar are becoming more widely used in many parts of the world, and, due to technological advances, increasingly efficient. Meanwhile, in the US and other countries, cars are becoming more fuel-efficient, thanks to efforts of automakers to improve vehicles’ miles-per-gallon numbers. Good news! But that’s not to say there’s zero controversy when it comes to the environment. For example, supporters of the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport crude oil from Canada to refineries in Texas, say the new fuel source will promote energy security, while opponents say the pipeline will have negative environmental consequences including accelerated climate change.
Fortunately, we don’t have to make a trade-off in our prayers — in other words, we don’t have to accept the idea that energy security must include environmental degradation, or that protecting the biosphere necessarily means damaging industry or putting the economy at risk. “Energy breakthroughs” sets the stage by explaining that all humanity’s needs are met through the understanding of God. That means that the responsible societal use of energy — and true energy security — will come naturally as we gain glimpses of God’s infinite power.
