Eye on the world: Ending modern slavery
In “In Asia, students take part in 24-hour relay races to end modern slavery” The Christian Science Monitor reports that “almost 46 million people around the world are living as slaves, forced to work in factories and mines, or trapped in debt bondage, according to the 2016 Global Slavery Index by the Australia-based Walk Free Foundation.” Asia accounts for two-thirds of the people subjected to modern slavery. Since 2010, a student-led initiative has been helping to raise awareness and donations to combat this injustice. “2,500 high school students … completed 24 hours of relay races in a student-led campaign in Asia to end modern slavery and human trafficking.”
Ideas on this subject:
From the Bible:
Ye shall not therefore oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God: for I am the Lord your God.
From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:
Discerning the rights of man, we cannot fail to foresee the doom of all oppression. Slavery is not the legitimate state of man. God made man free.
— Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 227
The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother’s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another’s good.

In “Prayerful steps to end the evils of modern-day slavery”: “No destiny of ruling another, or being ruled by another, could come from the God who is Love itself.” And “For me, praying with the First Commandment, ‘Thou shalt have no other gods before me’ (Exodus 20:3 ), is a powerful way to support freedom for those who are in bondage, as well as those who, in their own way, are trapped in the misguided belief that they will benefit from enslaving another. This commandment is the law of Love, tenderly governing humanity. Our prayers can reveal greater evidence of the all-power of Spirit and the supreme justice of Principle.”
In “Human trafficking: don’t look away”: “We can confront the issue of human trafficking squarely and metaphysically, through an engaged, fearless mental protest—by confidently realizing the spiritual truth of man’s inherent, unassailable freedom.” And “Right where these captives are, right now, every one of them can feel the touch of the Christ. Intelligent, principled thinking can reach the victims of slavery—those around the world and those in our own cities—with the Comforter, the Christ speaking to the human consciousness.”
